3 Reasons Why You Need To Rethink Your LinkedIn Header

On LinkedIn, you need to optimise your profile as much as possible to ensure that you’re maximising your visibility. And as the largest part of your profile, your header is one of the key parts of this process. Your header is your chance to shine in graphic form and stand out to your network, so it’s important to utilise it to represent not only you but what you want to bring to LinkedIn. Here are 3 reasons why you need to rethink your LinkedIn header.

Rethink Your LinkedIn Header By Thinking Of It As Your ‘Hook’

In literary terms, think of your header as the hook of your profile. Much like your profile picture it captures your audience’s attention and makes them want to scroll further down your profile and learn more about you. But, only if it’s good enough.

Your header can hook your audience in two ways – it allows you to flex those graphic skills but also shows off your worth in a more creative way than your lengthy job descriptions. So, instead of just telling your audience that, for instance, you’re a talented graphic designer with solid industry experience and a keen interest in minimalism, you can show them.

A well-thought-out, clear and concise header goes a lot further than a drawn-out summary in your headline, topped off by (deep breath…) no header at all.

Drop the Jargon

The whole point of your LinkedIn profile is to connect with those who you wouldn’t usually come across in your industry. So, how can you ensure that you’re not putting them off? You need to drop the jargon.

Avoid using complex, industry-specific terms, as this will have the opposite effect and limit who sees your profile. Remember, we’re going for simplicity. So, don’t overdo it and add terms that only your colleagues will be familiar with. How are you going to target different networks if they’re left clueless about your value?

Keep It Relevant

Remember what the goal is here. Ideally, you want your audience to be able to identify who you are, what you do and where you do it, all at one quick glance. That won’t be viable if your header is a generic photo that has no relation to your industry, or you.

So, to avoid people clicking off your profile, ensure your header is relevant to your job role, your professional interests or the reason you’re on LinkedIn. It’s all about that hook!

It’s really easy to change your header on LinkedIn. All you have to do is click on the pencil icon on your existing header, click ‘Change Photo’, select your new image and finish it off with ‘Apply’.
